This compendium presents a process documentation (PD) toolkit designed to support progress towards universal health coverage (UHC) in sub-Saharan Africa. It describes the PD approach developed by the African Platform for Health Financing Solutions (ACS) and coordinated by CERRHUD and R4D, specifying its objectives, principles and the resources required for its implementation. The document is aimed at decision-makers, implementers, healthcare providers, civil society organizations and researchers wishing to understand or apply the RFP. It is organized into three main sections: understanding PD, overview of resources and application with lessons learned. The first section defines PD, explains its usefulness for forward-looking policy analysis, and describes the conceptual framework and stages of the cycle. The second presents practical products: awareness-raising videos, didactic modules, a methodological guide, event and stakeholder registration forms, and an analysis canvas. The third presents country experiences (Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Namibia, Togo and Uganda), examples of use and challenges encountered, including ethical, technical and organizational issues. The compendium stresses the need for appropriate technology, trained human resources, methodological flexibility and a clear understanding of the added value of PD. Finally, it provides contacts and links to access tools, and encourages the adaptation of resources to the local context to enhance learning and action towards CSU. Concrete examples and practical guides accompany the approach.
